The Manifold Manifestations of Jesse Ball!
Jesse Ball is one of those fresh talents whose work shows up in many places and in many forms—indeed, he’s even appeared in these august webpages! In June 2008 Open Letters featured his poem “East Riding.” And in February 2008, Lianne Habinek shouldered the herculean task of sorting out, summing up, and explicating Ball’s mind-bending debut novel Samedi the Deafness.
Bloodsport video Mr. St. Nick rip Now Ball has a new novel forthcoming called The Way Through Doors, and Steve Donoghue has reviewed it in the current Quarterly Conversation. Donoghue is frustrated by much of the book’s careworn conceits, but Ball’s natural talent is never far from his mind:
Ball can turn from using words in whatever way first strikes him, revision be damned, his readers’ intelligence be damned, to using them with the care and precision of a writer twice his age.
Ball neophytes can therefore find a full primer to his work by following these links (naturally he has a cool website, too)—and then can move on to the books themselves .
