Open Letters invites submissions for a wide variety of writing on the arts, from staple subjects such as books, movies, and music to fields as specialized and diverse as medicine, cooking, or video games. See our mission statement on the masthead page to get a sense of our aesthetic aims. Our publishing criteria have little to do with subject matter (and almost nothing to do with essay length) and everything to do with the quality of the writing. We want crafted work that is both rigorously researched and accessible to any thoughtful reader—work that treats the understanding of art as a universal pursuit, and as a universal pleasure.

We’re also accepting poetry submissions (please send no more than two poems) and we’re looking for photographers and artists to contribute work for display on our main page. We’re trying to give a wide berth to Op-ed partisan politics, and we’re not yet publishing fiction. Finally, we can’t, at the moment, pay our contributors.

Send your submissions or queries to submissions@openlettersmonthly.com. Please give us a sense of what you’re proposing in the subject line of the email. We’ll try to get back to you as soon as we can.
